A Report from the Multicultural Education Summit convened by the San Francisco Unified School District by Susan Sandler and the Justice Matters Institute Discipline Task Force

Published 1999

This report follows up on the Reading the World: Redefining Literature and History Curriculum Summit held in San Francisco in September, 1998. The Summit brought together nationally renowned multicultural scholars and activists such as historian Ronald Takaki, education scholar Gloria Ladson-Billings, educator Herb Kohl, Rethinking Schools editor Bob Peterson, children's author Alma Flor Ada, and many more. These national figures came together with students, teachers, and policy makers to provide accurate information about multicultural education and to discuss policy needs and directions.

Reading the World features:

  • Documentation of the dynamic interchange of the Summit, capturing the latest thinking of known scholars, as well as today's teachers and youth;
  • Policy recommendations for high-quality, widespread implementation of multicultural curriculum;
  • Selected article reprints and original papers providing an overview of the field and tools for advocacy. Authors include James A. Banks, Carl A. Grant, Herb Kohl, Gloria Ladson-Billings, Sonia Nieto, Bob Peterson, Christine E. Sleeter, Ronald Takaki, and more;
  • Valuable resources for the multicultural education practitioner (e.g., references to curriculum materials, websites, organizations, etc.).
